The Marble Falls High School football team welcomes Brownwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the final regular season contest.

The Lions (5-4, 2-1) are in second place in the District 4-4A Division I standings thanks to wins against Burnet 38-7 Oct. 24 and Lampasas 42-39 Oct. 10. Their lone loss was to Stephenville 49-0 last week.

Brownwood secured the victory against Lampasas thanks to connecting on a seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Judson Coalson to receiver Carson Noe with 18 seconds remaining in the game. The Badgers led 14-7 after the first quarter, trailed 21-20 at the half, and 34-29 going into the fourth period.

” think Brownwood is a team that’s really starting to come on late with a first-year head coach (former Katy High School offensive coordinator Jeryl Brixley) and a first year in a new offense and defense,” Mustangs head coach Keri Timmerman said during his team’s bye week in late October. “I think they’re clicking at the right time for themselves.”

The Lions trailed Stephenville 14-0 at the half thanks to two first-quarter touchdowns. The Yellowjackets scored 21 points in the third quarter and 14 in the final stanza thanks to touchdown runs of eight, two and 10 yards.

“I think there’s Stephenville and the next four of us, and there’s parity within that,” Timmerman said a few weeks ago. “I think it’s a matter of catching people at the right time and being healthy. I think that all of us play physical football and we’re all trying to find a way to get in. So I’m excited about where we’re at, and I feel like we’re getting better and better.”

The Lions defense is led by Brinson Martin, who has 70 tackles, eight for loss, 3.5 sacks and a fumble recovery, Caven Webster, who has 65.5 tackles, two for loss and three interceptions, Wyatt Wolf, who has 61.5 tackles, one for loss and three interceptions, and Isaac Gonzales, who has 51.5 tackles, three for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Offensively, the Mustangs will rely on the Aguilar brothers to get the running game going. Senior Joaquin has 98 carries for 549 yards and eight touchdowns and freshman Diego has 65 rushes for 343 yards and two touchdowns. The elder Aguilar has been spending more time on the defensive side and senior fullback Doak Timmerman, who has 26 rushes for 136 yards and four scores, has been used more in short-yardage situations.

Sophomore quarterback Crawford Maddox has completed 57 of 119 passes for 575 yards, three touchdowns and eight interceptions and has 74 rushes for 203 yards and three scores. Senior receivers Kaden Langbein (22 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns) and Atreyu Machacek (24 receptions for 237 yards and two scores) handle the majority of the receiver duties. But sophomore tight end Olen Dalton (nine catches for 133 yards and a touchdown) is becoming Maddox’s third-down option, especially in the middle.

Offensively, the Lions will be looking to return to the form they had before Stephenville where the Yellowjackets limited them to 46 yards of total offense with minus 8 yards rushing and three turnovers. They average 25 point and 237 yards of total offense with 147 from their passing attack and 90 from their rushing attack.

Coalson has completed 82 of 147 passes for 1,320 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Noe has 37 catches for 692 yards and nine touchdowns and Connor Cornelius has 11 catches for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Trent Buggington has 518 yards and four scores and Levi Pearson has 412 yards and two scores.

The Mustang defense is led by several seniors: defensive back Gregory Lemon has 81 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, linebacker Brody Graham has 79, Timmerman has 68 and two fumble recoveries, defensive back Q Alexander has 57 and three interceptions, and defensive end Kaleb Bielfeldt has 56, six sacks, 24 quarterback hurries and an interception.
